Five Budget Friendly Home Décor Tips to Create a Fresh Look!

“Home is the nicest word there is.” – Laura Ingalls Wilder

I have been transitioning and freshening up the décor in my home to design lighter and brighter spaces. Making a few small changes throughout the home we purchased last spring has created a big impact. I am excited to share some easy and affordable budget friendly home décor tips that have helped me breathe new life into our home. Perhaps some of these ideas will provide inspiration for you to do the same.

Tip #1 – Paint

When freshening up a space, the first budget friendly home décor tip that will offer the biggest bang for your buck is paint! The current trend for wall color is actually…white! I love that look, especially on a shiplap wall. So pretty! However, for this space, I chose to use Sherwin William’s, Repose Gray. It is light and bright, yet still adds a bit of contrast between the trim and wall color.

If you’re not up for painting walls, how about painting a piece of furniture? This old European prayer bench is probably my favorite piece of furniture. I’ve had it for many years and have never seen anything else like it. It’s definitely a statement piece and adds warmth and character to this room. It was originally painted a mossy green color. I liked it but was ready a change. Sherwin Williams, Festoon Aqua was the color I chose to updated the look. Once the painting was complete, I dry brushed a tiny bit of white paint onto the piece. This helped to achieve an aged/distressed look which brought out all the DETAILS in the woodwork.

Tip #2 – Natural Elements

The second budget friendly home décor tip is to bring the outdoors in. If possible, use live house plants in your home. This will add life to any room. Confession: I love real plants…but do not usually have good luck with them. However, I have been trying my hand at adding a few plants to my home. So far, so good!

For this space, I chose to use faux greenery and flowers. Honestly, the quality of faux plants has improved over the past few years and I am continually impressed with how “real” the “faux” looks. To create a spring look, I added more greenery to the top of the bench. I chose to let it spill heavily over the top of one side creating an unbalanced look. I think this technique provides a more natural appearance. If you typically prefer balance and symmetry when styling your home, I challenge you to try this. I was DELIGHTED with the result!

The addition of flowers and stems tucked in a tote, a rustic twig basket and sweet little bird’s nest are further natural elements that did not break the bank. Instead,  they help to create a budget friendly and cozy vibe.

Tip #3 – Layering

When styling a mantel, open shelves, entryway table, etc., it is important to layer decorative items. For me, this means arranging and rearranging until the look I am after is achieved. This is where balance is really important…balance in size, shape, color, and texture. For this space, I used the picture to balance the height of the farmhouse sconce. The other items worked nicely in terms of color, texture, and shape. Overlapping (layering) décor items is visually appealing and simply takes experimenting until it looks and feels just right.

This third tip is budget friendly because oftentimes, you can shop your own home for items you want to showcase. For this space, I was able to collect the white pitcher, basket, and nest from other areas of my home to use in this display. I love it when I can create a fresh new look with items I already own.

Tip #4 – Texture

If your ultimate goal is to decorate a home that feels warm, welcoming, and cozy, you can’t forget to add texture. This is important because texture is appealing to our senses, both visual and tactile. Experiment by adding textural elements which will ultimately bring dimension to your space. In this case, texture was added by including a variety of surfaces, both smooth and rough. Fabrics, weathered wood, natural elements, baskets, and ironstone were utilized in this space to create a comfy vibe and eye-catching design. When shopping your home, or purchasing new items, consider using a variety of textures in each space.

Tip #5 – Textiles

Anyone else obsessed with textiles? Guilty! I love pillows….all shapes and sizes. I also adore comfy decorative throws (the softer the better). For this space I used a collection of pillows with varying colors, textures, and patterns. I also chose to use a very functional item (this cute tote) as part of the décor.  It’s such a pretty bag and blends in perfectly with the pillows (maybe that’s why I love it so much).

I truly hope you will find these budget friendly home décor tips to be useful as you create fresh new looks in the spaces of your own home.
